Lone candidate enters Shakopee School Board race

Jeffrey Smith filed his paperwork on Friday to run for a first term on the Shakopee School Board.

Smith previously applied for the open spot to fill former board member Reggie Bowerman’s vacated seat in January. He was one of the three finalists out of seven applicants, but Tim Brophy was appointed instead.

There are three school board seats up for grabs in November. Board members Matt McKeand, Angela Tucker, and Brophy are at the end of their terms. None of them have filed to run this election cycle, but the filing period is open through Aug. 11.

Smith is the only school board candidate to file paperwork so far.

“I believe patriotism equals service,” Smith said. “I’m hopeful to be selected for the school board to continue my lifetime of service to my country and community.”

Smith and his wife Jenny have lived in Shakopee since 2001 and have two teenage boys who both attend Shakopee High School.

Jeffrey Smith filed Friday to run for Shakopee School Board.

By day, Smith is an IT Manager at Pearson VUE and has been with the company since 2004. He served 27 years in the United States Army, Army National Guard, and Army Reserve and retired in 2015.

Locally, Smith has served as president of the Shakopee Band Boosters, assistant coach of the high school mountain bike team and is a volunteer veteran mentor for Scott County.

Smith said he believes a quality public education is critical to a successful community.

“Improving and maintaining our already high-quality school district by focusing on the needs of students and their award-winning teachers should be important to every Shakopee resident, regardless of whether they have children who currently attend school here,” he said.

Smith added that he understands how important it is for elected officials to be good stewards of citizens’ tax dollars.

“(I) will carefully research funding proposals as well as provide oversight on the district’s budget and expenditures,” Smith said.
