Shakopean is an independent, locally-owned online news website. Our mission is to be a trusted source for news that impacts and matters to the residents of Shakopee.

We have a penchant for unearthing public documents and getting to the bottom of rumors, so news tips and other tidbits are always welcome.

Shakopean was founded and is managed by Amanda McKnight. McKnight has been reporting for hyperlocal publications since 2003, including six years (2013-2019) at the Shakopee Valley News.

McKnight is a communications coordinator for a non-profit organization by day and reporter by night and weekend. She and her husband live in Shakopee with their two children, cat, and 31 plants. McKnight can be found kayaking on Thole Lake during the summer or popping up unexpectedly at public meetings all year-round.

Most recognized for her investigative work uncovering embezzlement of public funds by former Shakopee Schools superintendent Rod Thompson, McKnight has earned seven Minnesota Newspaper Association awards and a Society of Professional Journalists Page One Award.
