Preliminary results point to a Mortensen victory in House District 55A

Updated at 8:02 a.m. Wednesday

Republican challenger Erik Mortensen defeated incumbent state House Rep. Brad Tabke (DFL) by a margin of 560 votes, about 2.4% of the vote, in the race for District 55A, according to preliminary election results.

Legal Marijuana Now candidate Ryan Martin received 1,705 votes, or 7.4%.

Nearly 92% of the 25,744 registered voters in House District 55A cast ballots in the District 55A race.

In 2018, Tabke became the first DFL candidate since 1998 to be elected to the House seat serving Shakopee and Jackson and Louisville Townships. He defeated Mortensen by 602 votes.

Mortensen posted on his campaign Facebook page sometime after 2 a.m. Wednesday thanking his supporters and saying, “Now the fun begins!” He has not responded to Shakopean’s requests for comments as of 8 a.m. Wednesday.

Tabke posted on Facebook early Wednesday as well, thanking his supporters and saying he’s proud of everything he and his supporters accomplished together. He stopped short of conceding the race definitively.

“We won’t say anything definitive until all of the votes are counted, but if this outcome stands, I wish Mr. Mortensen the best of luck in representing our community,” Tabke said.
