Former Shakopee School Board Member Mary Romansky died on Monday, Nov. 11, at St. Gertrude’s Health Care Center.
Romansky was on the Shakopee School Board until her early retirement in early 2018. Board member Judi Tomczik was appointed to fill Romansky’s seat after her departure.
Even in death, Romansky wants to help students in the Shakopee district by requesting memorials in her name go to Good To Go Kids, a non-profit organization Romansky started in 2012. Good To Go Kids provides weekend food for children experiencing food insecurity at home. The organization has also provided graduation pictures and parties for students who cannot afford them on their own.
In 2014, Romansky teamed up with Shakopee resident Kristine Robinson to collect donated prom dresses for local high schoolers in need. Romansky and Robinson also collected monetary donations so girls going to prom could get their hair and nails done.
At the time, Romansky told the Shakopee Valley News, “We want them to feel like they’re part of their class and can participate in activities just like any other kid. I still remember going to prom. It stays with you. It’s a good experience.”
In June 2015, Romansky had a stroke that caused her to step back from her school board duties for several months. Doctors weren’t sure she would survive the major brain hemorrhage she experienced, but she surpassed expectations by not only surviving but learning to walk and talk again. She had to relearn how to do everyday tasks like use a computer, but with the help of St. Gertrude’s, she was able to do so.
“The first couple days were touch and go,” Romansky told the Valley News in October 2015, just months after the stroke. “But I surprised them by going through it and existing.”
In 2016, Romansky was named to the All-State School Board, which is the most prestigious honor given by the Minnesota School Board Association.
According to McNearney-Schmidt Funeral Home, Romansky is survived by her husband, Bob Romansky, her son Chris Romansky, and her daughter, Katie Dailey.
